An applicant using their spouse's foreign work experience as a Civil Engineer for CEC noticed the employer's reference letter didn't list specific roles and responsibilities, and wanted to know if that's an issue for foreign (non-Canadian) experience.
What group members advised:- The IRCC letter format requirement applies equally to foreign and Canadian experience. There's no exception for foreign employers — the letter still needs to follow IRCC's expected structure, including specific duties performed.
- Roles and responsibilities are a required element, not optional detail. If the employer is unwilling or unable to reissue the letter with that information, add a Letter of Explanation to fill the gap, and consider providing supporting alternatives (e.g. pay stubs, tax documents, or a personal statement corroborating the duties) alongside it.
Don't assume foreign employers get a pass on IRCC's format — plan ahead to request the correct letter, or prepare a strong LOE and supporting evidence if that's not possible.
