Group members clarified a common misunderstanding about how the STEM category-based Express Entry draw actually works.
How STEM draws work:- You can't apply directly under STEM — there's no separate STEM application stream. You create a regular Express Entry profile, which is scored under existing categories like Canadian Experience Class (CEC) or Federal Skilled Worker (FSW).
- IRCC periodically runs a category-based draw for STEM occupations. If your profile's NOC matches the official STEM occupation list and your CRS score meets that draw's cutoff, you become eligible to be picked in that specific round.
- Check the official STEM NOC list directly — members specifically noted that "Technologist" job titles (as opposed to "Engineer") are often not included in the STEM occupation list, even though the role sounds STEM-related. Creating an EE profile alone won't make you eligible if your exact NOC isn't on that list.
Takeaway: verify your specific NOC code against IRCC's current STEM occupation list before counting on a STEM-specific draw — job titles that sound STEM-adjacent (like technologist vs. engineer) aren't automatically included.
