An Ontario-based candidate expecting an Express Entry invitation (CRS 498, general category) asked whether to get the Police Clearance Certificate in advance or wait for the ITA.
- Apply early if you won't travel home again. The clear consensus: get the PCC now. The only reason to wait is planned travel — if you visit your home country after the PCC is issued, you'll typically need a fresh one covering that stay.
- Budget the processing time. Applying for an Indian PCC from within Canada was taking about 6 weeks. Since the post-ITA document submission window is limited, starting the PCC only after the invitation creates avoidable deadline pressure — the whole point of preparing it in advance.
- Match the PCC to your travel history. A related question in the thread — whether a PCC issued after leaving the home country still works if you haven't been back — reflects the underlying rule members worked from: the PCC needs to cover your most recent period in that country. If you haven't returned since it was issued, it generally remains usable; a new visit resets that.
Historical note: the CRS levels discussed (general-category draws around the high 490s–500s) are specific to the 2023–24 draw environment and change constantly.
