Applicants sometimes assume a CLB 7 overall is a hard requirement for every Express Entry stream, and worry when their IELTS lands just under that (e.g. 6.5 overall).
What group members advised:- The minimum CLB requirement depends on which Express Entry program you fall under, not a single universal number. One member noted you can still create an EE profile if you meet CLB 6 in each module — this applies to streams with lower language thresholds (such as the Canadian Experience Class for certain NOC categories), as opposed to Federal Skilled Worker, which does require CLB 7.
- Your CRS score, not just the language threshold, is what ultimately determines your invitation chances. A member pointed out that once you're eligible to create a profile, what matters most going forward is your overall CRS score relative to recent draw cut-offs.
Before assuming you're blocked from Express Entry, check which specific program(s) you qualify for based on your work experience category — the CLB 7 rule doesn't apply universally.
