Applying for a TRV after getting your PGWP: inland vs. from outside Canada

Step-by-Step

If you already hold a Post-Graduation Work Permit and now need a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV, e.g. to travel and re-enter Canada):

  1. Apply for the TRV from inside Canada if you're already here, rather than applying from outside. Applicants report inland applications processing noticeably faster than applications submitted from outside the country.

  2. You don't need to wait outside Canada for the decision. You can submit the inland application, then travel to your home country while it's in process.

  3. Once approved, get the visa stamped at a visa application centre in your home country before using it to travel back.

Reported inland processing times have been fast for some applicants (one reported approval within about a week), though this can vary — treat it as a data point, not a guarantee.

Dos, Don'ts & Tips

  • Do: Apply for your TRV from inside Canada while your PGWP is valid — inland applications have generally processed faster than applying from outside.
  • Tip: You can travel to your home country after applying inland and get the visa stamped there once it's approved, rather than waiting in Canada for the physical visa.
