Do you need to inform IRCC of an approved PGWP extension while your PR/Express Entry application is in process?

Documents Needed

  • New work permit document

Optional to send via webform for your own peace of mind, even though it's not formally required.

Step-by-Step

If your PGWP extension is approved (and the document number has changed) while you have a Permanent Residence / Express Entry application in progress:

  1. You generally don't need to proactively notify IRCC. Your Unique Client Identifier (UCI) stays the same across your work permit and PR applications, so IRCC can already link and see your updated status internally.

  2. If you want extra peace of mind, you can still submit the new work permit copy through a webform. This isn't described as required, but some applicants do it anyway for their own documentation trail.

  3. Keep a copy of both the old and new work permit documents in case any discrepancy comes up later in your PR processing, even though a proactive submission isn't mandatory.

Because processing practices can vary by IRCC office, if you have any doubt about your specific file, a low-effort webform submission is a reasonable extra step even though it's optional.

Dos, Don'ts & Tips

  • Tip: Your UCI stays the same across work permit and PR files, so IRCC can generally see an approved PGWP extension without a separate notification.
  • Do: If you want extra assurance, send your new work permit copy via webform — optional, but a common precaution.
