If you're eligible for a full 3-year Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) but your passport expires sooner than that, the permit's actual validity will be capped by your passport — so timing your passport renewal matters.
What group members advised:- Your PGWP's validity will be based on your passport's expiry date, meaning even if you qualify for the maximum 3 years, IRCC will only issue the permit up to whenever your current passport expires.
- Most passport offices won't let you renew more than 1 year before expiry. If your passport doesn't expire soon enough to renew yet, you generally can't jump the queue just to support your PGWP application.
- Because of that renewal restriction, the practical options are: apply for PGWP first with your current passport (accepting a shorter permit tied to that passport), then extend the PGWP later once your passport is renewed — or ask your passport office about a short-validity passport issued specifically to support a PGWP application, if that service is available in your case.
Expect to potentially apply for a PGWP extension down the line if you go the 'apply now' route, so keep track of both your original PGWP's expiry and your passport renewal timeline.
