PGWP expiring with a low CRS score: how to stay in Canada legally afterward

Canada • Post-Graduation Work Permit • work 0 views

Documents Needed

  • Visitor record application

Apply before your PGWP expires if you plan to stay in Canada without working.

  • New LMIA / closed work permit application

Needed if you plan to keep working after PGWP expiry, arranged through your employer.

Step-by-Step

If your PGWP is expiring and your CRS score isn't yet competitive for an Express Entry draw, you have two main paths depending on whether you want to keep working:

  1. To stay in Canada without working: apply for a visitor record before your current work permit expires. Simply holding a visitor visa is not enough on its own — a visitor record is the specific document that lets you legally remain in Canada once your work permit lapses.

  2. To keep working: talk to your employer about sponsoring a closed (employer-specific) work permit, which typically requires the employer to go through the LMIA process.

  3. Apply before expiry, not after. Submitting either application while your PGWP is still valid preserves your status and (in the case of a further work permit) may give you implied status to continue working while it's processed.

This is general community guidance, not a guarantee — confirm current processing routes on IRCC's website since permit categories and LMIA exemptions change.

Dos, Don'ts & Tips

  • Do: Apply for a visitor record before your PGWP expires if you want to remain in Canada without working.
  • Don't: Don't assume your visitor visa stamp alone lets you stay past your work permit's expiry — you need an actual visitor record.
  • Tip: If you want to keep working, ask your employer about a closed work permit via LMIA rather than waiting on Express Entry alone.
