If your PGWP is expiring and your CRS score isn't yet competitive for an Express Entry draw, you have two main paths depending on whether you want to keep working:
- To stay in Canada without working: apply for a visitor record before your current work permit expires. Simply holding a visitor visa is not enough on its own — a visitor record is the specific document that lets you legally remain in Canada once your work permit lapses.
- To keep working: talk to your employer about sponsoring a closed (employer-specific) work permit, which typically requires the employer to go through the LMIA process.
- Apply before expiry, not after. Submitting either application while your PGWP is still valid preserves your status and (in the case of a further work permit) may give you implied status to continue working while it's processed.
This is general community guidance, not a guarantee — confirm current processing routes on IRCC's website since permit categories and LMIA exemptions change.
