A couple with a spouse's PGWP about to expire and a CRS just under recent draw cutoffs asked how to keep the spouse legally working in Canada.
What members clarified:- If you (the principal) are on a PGWP, your spouse can apply for their own open work permit using supporting documentation of your relationship and status — this gives them independent legal status and work authorization.
- If both of you are still studying, you can apply together after finishing your studies: one of you gets a PGWP, and the spouse gets an open work permit (OWP) alongside it.
- On Express Entry: it doesn't matter who holds which visa. Either spouse can be the primary applicant on the EE profile — the profiles are separate from your work-permit statuses, so your spouse can create their own EE profile as the primary applicant if that gives a better combined score.
- Any NOC can apply for a SOWP as long as the sponsoring spouse isn't on a closed work permit themselves.
Takeaway: a spouse's PGWP expiring doesn't have to end their status in Canada — a SOWP tied to your own valid status is a normal bridge, and either of you can lead the Express Entry application regardless of who holds which permit.
