A student with classes starting September 7th asked how early they could travel to Canada.
What group members advised:- Officially, you can travel up to 4 weeks (30 days) before your program start date — this was cited as the standard, generally accepted window.
- Traveling too early can cause problems at the border. One member cautioned that arriving well ahead of that window can raise questions from immigration officers about your purpose of travel.
- Enforcement has tightened over time. Group members noted that while people used to travel 2-3 months ahead in the past without much issue, officers are now stricter, and travelling any earlier than the ~30-day window should be justified (e.g. needing time to find accommodation and settle in).
The practical takeaway: plan to arrive no more than about 30 days (4 weeks) before your classes start, and be ready to explain your reason for early arrival (housing, settling in) if asked at the border.
