Renewed your passport after taking IELTS? Your score card is still valid

Documents Needed

  • Old (expired) passport copy

Attach alongside your IELTS score card wherever you're applying, since the score card's candidate ID is tied to the old passport number.

  • New passport

Check the last page — many passports print the previous passport number there, which links the two documents.

Step-by-Step

If you took IELTS before renewing your passport, a passport number mismatch with your score card is not a problem:

  1. Keep a copy of your old (expired) passport and attach it alongside your IELTS score card whenever you submit an application, so the candidate ID on the score card can be matched to you.

  2. Check the last page of your new passport. Most renewed passports print the previous passport number on the last page, which visually links the old number (on your IELTS score) to your current passport.

No action is needed with IELTS/IDP or IRCC to update the candidate ID — the score card remains valid and usable as long as you can show the connection between your old and new passport numbers.

Dos, Don'ts & Tips

  • Do: Attach your old, expired passport copy alongside the IELTS score card when applying, to bridge the candidate ID mismatch.
  • Tip: Check the last page of your new passport — it usually lists your previous passport number, confirming the link to your IELTS score card.
