If a closed work permit is terminated (e.g., after resigning and the employer notifying IRCC), a short return trip to Canada just to collect belongings raises questions about whether re-entry is still possible.
What group members advised:- Check whether your TRV stamp is tied to your work permit's validity or independently dated. Some TRVs are conditioned on an underlying work permit remaining valid — if so, a terminated permit could cause an issue at the border even if the TRV's printed date hasn't passed.
- If the TRV stamp itself is still valid on its own terms, entering to visit (not work) is generally fine — you just can't work, since the work permit has been cancelled.
The key distinction: a valid TRV lets you enter as a visitor, but a cancelled work permit means you cannot resume working, even briefly, during that visit.
