Historical note: the SDS/non-SDS split described here is from 2022; SDS-era streams have since changed. Check IRCC's current application routes.
An applicant refused under SDS — with full program fee and GIC already paid — asked whether reapplying under non-SDS is advisable. Members said yes, and explained how:
- Reapplying non-SDS is a legitimate route and some found it less stressful, with a fuller document set. One member refused under SDS was approved on the second attempt under non-SDS after attaching everything the SDS file had, plus complete financials.
- How the checklist gets triggered: answers in the GCKey questionnaire (e.g., ticking 'No' for GIC or first-year fee payment) produce the non-SDS document checklist. Alternatively, some members applied under SDS but attached extra financial documents under optional/client-information slots.
- Never misstate facts to force a checklist. One member asked whether to declare IELTS below 6.0 despite higher scores — others pushed back: your TRF goes in the file, so declare truthfully. If you tick 'No' for GIC to route non-SDS, still attach the GIC certificate. The repeated warning: do not hide anything from IRCC.
- Use the non-SDS advantage: attach bank statements, property/financial evidence and a revised SOP addressing the refusal reasons — the things a bare SDS file couldn't show.
Net: the stream matters less than the file. Reapply with every strong document you hold, declared honestly.
